Stuck on Christmas
Biblical Reference: The Christmas story. Approximate Running Time: 45-60 minutes Cast of Characters: 2 Males, 4 Females, 1 Either Sex There is also a Choir and a Nativity Scene: Mary, Joseph, Jesus, shepherds, and wise men. Synopsis This is the second Christmas program I have written and I believe it too can have a strong impact on your congregation at a time of year when we are all experiencing strong emotions. Many of us get caught up in the traditions of Christmas each year. We get stuck in the worldly ways that we celebrate the most blessed time of the year and we often forget to worship the true reason for the season. In this play, six characters find themselves stuck on an elevator at the mall on Christmas eve. They realize that they are there past the closing time of the mall and come to the realization that they may be stuck there all night, thereby missing Christmas morning in their own homes. While they discuss the situation they find themselves in, a little 8 year old girl brings them to the realization that they spend way too much time celebrating the worldly aspects of Christmas and have forgotten the true meaning of the season: Jesus Christ. She asks her mother to retell the Christmas story. As she is retelling the story, the nativity scene assembles before the audience on stage, accentuating the words of the story. With everyone's focus changed, the play ends in fairy-tale manner. They are discovered by a mall security guard, released from the elevator, and on their way to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ at a local candle light service. They have reconciled with their Lord and plan to keep their rediscovered focus. The situation has caused them to befriend one another and they make plans to celebrate the holiday together. The classic hymns, the age old story of Jesus birth, and the contemporary drama mix together to present a powerful presentation to effect your congregation, and those visiting, in a powerful way. I encourage you to read through this play to determine the effect it can have on your congregation.
