Heart and Soul
The Grandmother

The Heart and Soul Series is a series of five powerful monologues written to convey various struggles and triumphs of five different women who are looking back on the experiences of five different stages of life. These monologues can be performed individually, on consecutive weeks, or as a single program.

The Grandmother is the last of the series. It presents the viewpoint of an older woman, a grandmother, as she looks back on her life, the differences in cultures, and deals with a decreasing role in the lives of those who are around her.

The Bible clearly tells us that it is the job of the older members of the church to disciple the younger members. They are to teach from their scriptural knowledge, their life experiences, and the wisdom they have attained over the years. But what happens if the younger generation doesn't want to be taught by what they believe to be an older, dying, useless generation?

This monologue allows an older woman to express her frustration in not being able to fulfill the biblical role of being a source of wisdom and guidance in a culture that has left the elderly to die alone. Through her struggles she has learned to be content in all things. She has learned to be patient and willing to endure whatever the Lord has in store for her. She has come to realize that everything seems small when compared to what Christ did for us on the cross.

May the Lord use this monologue to open our eyes to the wisdom we are letting slip through our fingers as we leave thousands of elderly people to die on their own because we deem them to be unable to contribute to a younger society.
