Synopsis

Sometimes we get caught up in the competition of giving more than our neighbor even though our gift isn't well thought through, or we forget that we are supposed to do unto others as we would have them do unto us. We need to remember that a gift from the bottom of the pile, or out of wrong intentions, isn't a gift at all.

In this play Josh is trying to collect donations for a food drive that his church is participating in. The goal of the food drive is to collect five thousand pounds of food. He approaches his neighbor, Doug, who is all ready planning what he is going to donate. He's going through the sale ad in search of the cheapest food per pound and planning on buying as many of that food item that he can get for a hundred dollars. He finds that potatoes are the cheapest per pound and plans on buying about a thousand pounds of potatoes for the food drive.

Josh is not too happy to hear that his church is going to have to hand out a thousand pounds of potatoes to the recipients of the food pantry and explains to Doug what it would be like to be on the receiving end of a hundred pound bag of potatoes. He then suggests that Doug donate what he would buy in a typical week, thereby donating something that would be useful to the recipient.

When we take into account the Biblical mandates to love another and do unto others as we would have them do unto us, then our giving to others will take on a whole new perspective. This play can be used to show your audience that perspective.
