A Friendly Competition

Approximate Running Time: 15 minutes

Cast of Characters: 1 Male, & 2 Females

Synopsis

Are you planning an all-night-sports-night or another type of a competition for one of your church groups? Do you want to begin the festivities with a hilarious play that teaches the participants that winning isn't everything? If you answered yes to both of the above questions, or if you want to perform the play in front of an unsuspecting audience, then the play "A Friendly Competition" is for you.

Josh and Beth are in charge of putting together and refereeing a sports competition involving the youth of their church. Rather than just be involved in the refereeing end of the games, Josh decides that he is going to compete to win. He comes dressed to win every event that is planned. When Beth confronts him on his motives he turns on her and challenges her to compete with him. After spending some time trying to convince Josh that he has the wrong motives he enrages her and she becomes determined to prove that he can't beat her at any of the competitions.

At this point I couldn't determine which way to end the play, so I wrote two different endings. The first play (sports.doc) ends with the two determined to prove the other the loser. The second play (sports1.doc) ends as a member of the youth group reminds the two that there is more to playing than winning.

Either play is a riot to watch and to perform. I'm sure that you'll laugh out loud at least once as you read through the script.
